Hi Mary

Personally, I used a 'wick' dressing when the drain was in (sort of like a
square of gauze with a slit 3/4 of the way through one side), which draped
around the drain and then plain, old disposable paper breastpads on top. I
placed 1-2 down low under the abscess site and then another one on top.
Just change every few hours when you feed. Milk leaking was only a real
problem when I let down. It just wasn't a drama, and I certainly didn't
want complicated dressings and people fiddling around the abscess drain site
too much. Healed within 5 days of the drain being removed and I think the
breastmilk helped in the healing process.

Did she ask why? I fed within 1/2 hour of the anaesthetic for incision &
drainage of the abscess (now I would do castor oil packs or ask for repeated
needle aspiration, but that is another topic). Lawrence talks about
abscesses that rupture into the ductal system and the need to monitor the
infant, but that weaning from that breast is rarely indicated.

Good luck with your friend.
