Ooh, interesting thoughts!  Well, why do the formula salesmen put so much energy into cozying up to HCPs?  Because we're more likely to do their bidding if we like them!  But is that so bad?  Don't we all, as consultants of any field, try to be friendly and likeable?  That doesn't change our recommendations or suggestions, but it *does* make them more likely to be adopted.  If we don't get good personal vibes from a personal physician, whatever his/her skill, we're likely to go looking for another.  So when we quit smoking on our doctor's advice, is it strictly because we've internalized the risks, or is it in part because we don't want to let our doctor down?  

At some point, of course, the mom/patient/client needs to continue an action because he or she wants it for him/herself.  But "force of character" probably isn't a bad thing at all, in getting a person to *begin* to sustain a certain activity...  Really, what reason does a person typically have for trying something new, other than that someone they like or admire thinks it's a good idea?  Heck, I'm about to go have lunch because my DH told me to...
