Does anyone know of research available on how to supplement when you are unable to give 100 % mothers own milk to preterm infants.?
When our moms have supplies that don't meet the daily requirements I see all kinds of management. Some Neos/NNP's will begin 1/2 breast milk and 1/2 formula with each feeding to stretch the amount of breast milk. Some will alternate a breast milk feeding then a formula feeding. Some will sue 100% breast milk for as long as possible. I have heard practitioners say they would rather have some breast milk each day than use it as a priority and have it spread out over more days.
Sometimes moms have quit pumping and we only have a limited amount of available breast milk. Other times she continues to pump but after proper management is unable to produce a full supply

We currently use donor milk for babies under 33 weeks if we don't have enough MOM but for those not meeting our criteria we use preterm formula.

Any thoughts, protocols or research that anyone has seen that would be useful to make recommendations from?
