The California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC) has had, since
the early 2000's, a toolkit of best evidence-based practices for care of
the very low birthweight (VLBW) baby in the NICU. It includes an entire
Appendix (IV) on human milk ... and within it, a consent form for use of
human milk from a known donor. With a hat tip to Lactnet's own Nancy Wight,
who was instrumental in the development of this resource.

If it is considered safe for the VLBW baby, after the sort of common sense
risk-benefit analysis and informed decision-making that the consent form
envisions, then for a healthy term baby it ought to be a no-brainer.

We know humans have been using cooperative infant feeding practices since,
well, humans came along. Families who have believed us, when we have said
"Breastfeeding is a public health imperative!", ought to be able to access
human milk if they are not making it themselves. Public health means it is
for the *whole* public. Families that are formed by surrogacy, adoption,
IVF, etc. ... or when a parent cannot make sufficient milk themselves, for
whatever biologic or logistical reason ... should not find roadblocks to
the significant reduction in morbidities and mortalities that
breastfeeding/chestfeeding and human milk use permits.

(Whoo! That a little soap-boxy. I'm feeling the need for a surge in
advocacy these days, in the USA, with our change in Administrations.)
