Among the dangers of "sterilizing" pumps in the dishwasher,

Not to mention losing costly pump parts to the dishwasher-monster who
melts and mangles them. Yes, it happens.
My system was to store the pump parts in a container with a tight lid.
After use, I dismantled the pump, threw the parts in, squirted a drop of
detergent, and filled the container several times with hot running
water, using the lid to strain off the pump parts until I could see no
soap. Then I washed my hands and picked up each part to rinse it again
under running water and laid them on a clean towel to dry. I figured
clean hands were probably good enough. Once a day I boiled water for a
few minutes and poured it into the same container (after soap and
rinsing). It was manageable, although I remember thinking that I would
have been bf more frequently or longer sometimes if I hadn't had to put
the baby down to pump, then put the baby down again to clean the pump.
In our case it was necessary: see next post.
