I have finally reconnected to Lactnet after months of withdrawal!!
I have to share this with you.
In my 100-bed hosp., where rooming-in is as yet a myth, the only way I
can see that maximum number of moms in the few hours I am there is to
have them come to my "breastfeeding room" in the 45 minutes they are
allowed to have their babies (I know I have alot of work to do on this!)
It is actually kind of nice, reminiscent of LLL days to see all these
moms feeding together.
Last Thursday, I had an LC's nightmare: a super-motivated mom with super
sensitive nipples and a "chomper" with a maga-suck that made her scream
and jump to the ceiling every time he latched on. Other new moms were
starting to get that look in their eyes like, maybe this is not really
for me,when they saw her.
I told her to wait for me in her room and I would come to her. She was
also the grumpy complaining type that you are sometimes ready to give
all the formula samples to. But she really wanted to breastfeed.
to make this short, I spent the next 4 days helping her, coming in to
the hosp on my free time, and using every technique in my brain to help
her. She is now at home and nursing with a smile. during the course of
my contact with her, I discovered that her father is the MINISTER OF
HEALTH of Israel, and now maybe we can finally get the whole issue of
recognition of our certification, and breastfeeding support on the part
of the health ministry addressed. She will set up an appt with her
father for me, and be our advocate.
So, you just never know who is behind those breasts you are dealing
with!
Any issues of lone LC's in hospitals I want to be part of.
