Of course, Jan, I understand what Nancy was pointing out. I understand
that. Unfortunately, from where many LCs sit, the physician is
traditionally in the role of "knowing," and directing or overseeing
care. If they are not aware of current research, and are directing care,
where does this leave us?

It is not a simple of complex problem, and I certainly would never
assert that it is so. It is a historically and culturally charged
behemoth at this point. It is also deeply personal, since many problems
are spawned when we are faced with giving advice that perhaps we did not
follow ourselves. Then we really have to face who we are ourselves, as
parents, and that is not easy.

Again, my discussion points center on generalities, and are not directed
to any one person on this list or anywhere else. This is a whole lot
bigger than that...in terms of history and impact. A mighty complex
issue at that.

Respectfully,

Kathleen

I'm rambling, and I apologize (it's early here), but I guess I echo
Nancy's comment that pediatricians don't really KNOW, and do believe
that the "research" on breastfeeding is hyped up -- that formula really
is just fine
-- that it has saved many baby's lives..... and remember, they are
looking at it from a perspective of clean water and "safe" alternatives
in cushy America, forgetting that even in America, babies die from not
being breastfed.
