I would LOVE to see a study on the following: Let's just say that using a
pacifier does in fact reduce the risk of SIDS, well, what if in the place of
a pacifier the baby was sucking on the breast while co-sleeping with the
mother all night. What if that reduced the risk of SIDS even more?? Then you
have not only whatever effect the constant sucking has on the baby, but you
have the baby regulating body temp and respirations because it's sleeping
next to mom. I just explained to my cousin that it's not lack of oxygen that
causes us to breathe, it's actually the increase of CO2. So when mom is
breathing out CO2 into the baby's face it causes baby to breathe. I don't
have any studies to cite this, but it's something I recall one of my
co-Leaders talking about not to long ago. Also, I think it was Dr. Sears who
did a very small "study" where he monitored a baby's blood oxygen levels
while sleeping next to mom and there levels always remained stable. Then he
moved baby into the next room into a crib and away from mom. Baby had over
100 dips in blood oxygen level. He repeated this study with another mother
and baby and the findings were similar. The purpose of this was to get
someone to do a much larger and more conclusive study.
Well, one can always dream I suppose.... Christina Costa, LLLL, Broward
