The comments about catching up on sleep with very busy toddlers brought
back memories of how I managed grad school with a toddler-preschooler.

I arranged my day so that when I was not in grad school, I was totally
home; i.e., not studying, but really being a fulltime mother in all
respects. When Doug went to bed (usually around 9PM), I then studied, til
3AM. I survived on 4 hrs of sleep 5 days a week, catching up on the
weekends, when I routinely gave myself permission to sleep 12 hours if
needed.  That was my life for 4 years.

It might not work for everyone, but it worked for me.  When asked how I
made it through a difficult period (I was a single mother, living on less
than $4000/year (not on welfare, which I could not stomach), I simply said:
You do what you have to do. I honestly never thought it as anything but a
way to get through a temporary difficult time.

Some of our best fun occurred with no money, but lots of attention to one
another!
