PS. I must say, after re reading, that there were a lot of problems with the
initial birth and care ... She couldn't breastfeed right away, she couldn't
see the LC, etc etc etc. I would explain to this mother that she needs to
get on the proverbial stick, now, and get going with pumping, with seeing
the IBCLC in your area who can evaluate oral motor skills, and latch
correctly, and who can suggest a plan of action. Seems like everything that
could have happened to her, has, and it's time for her baby to get moving
and start breastfeeding.... : )

I think that indeed the baby needs an evaluation that can further identify
oral issues such as posterior tongue tie. The mom should go to an IBCLC,
and should have a plan in the meanwhile to feed the baby, since he is not
latching...and a plan to support her supply. A double pump, hospital
grade, would be useful here, and also some one who is really knowledgeable
regarding oral anatomy would be helpful.... I would find Cathy Genna's
article on tongue ties.....and take a look there. If you go to the
wonderful pages by Kelly Bonyata,

http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/bfhelp-tonguetie.html

There are tons of good articles on tongue issues.

And specifically, go to:

http://www.aap.org/breastfeeding/8-27%20Newsletter.pdf

For the article on tongue tie (the best I've read) by our own Cathy Genna,
Drs. Coryllos and Saloum. It is on the AAP website, above.
