Dear friends!

I am looking for an info about the use of fresh breast milk (mothers´
own EBM) in NICUs. Our ward is level 2 NICU and until recently we used
mothers´own fresh EBM 48 hours after expressing according the
guideline of our Milk Bank. The Milk Bank changed it´s guideline last
year to 24 hours and we are not happy with that since it does not
follow the evidence. We used mothers´own fresh EBM 48 hours for a
couple of years and there was no problems. We understand that in Level
3 NICU it could be ok to use EBM only 24 hours but our hospitals level
2 NICUs could use 48 hours. If we are allowed to use EBM 48 hours we
could give it more easily following the circadian rhythm. It is
devastating to put EBM to freezer after 24 hours or give baby at 9 pm
milk that was expressed 11 am if that 11 am milk would be "too old" to
give next morning.

We are going to gather information and visit Milk Bank manager with it
to change storage time back to 48 hours. It would help if I you are
willing to share your guidelines in other level 2 NICUs.

Warmly,
Pia Ruohotie
