Dear Lactnetters:
I have been an avid lurker for several weeks and am enjoying the exchange of
expertise and ideas. To introduce myself: I have been an RN for many years
in various OB settings -- Nursery, pp, L&D. I was always relied upon as the
resident breastfeeding resource so I decided I might as well become as
knowledgable and credible as I could. I became an IBCLC two years ago and
am currently employed full-time as LC in a hospital with approx 1800
deliveries/yr. I am constantly challenged and am realizing daily there is
SO MUCH TO LEARN!! For that reason, I am grateful there are so many wise,
experienced and diversified individuals out there to help.
Now for my problem: I searched the archives with no success BTW.
Today an OB asked me -- Would an absent maternal serum estriol level
discovered at 15-20 wks gest. during the Triple Screen analysis,
cause any problems with BF such as insufficient supply, etc.? This mom had a
previous vag del of an 81/2 # baby and nursed successfully at that time.
She was in labor today but after 26 hours of
spont ruptured membranes, cervical dilatation unchanged at 2 cm/70% effaced
in spite of pitocin augmentation he was preparing her for a C/S. He
attributed the unchanged cervix and lack of progress to the absent estriol
and wondered if there would be any impact on BF.
I could find no reference in Lawrence or Riordan/Auerbach(my two "bibles")
and would like a response ASAP. I have no idea about whether she
experienced any breast changes, leaking, etc. during pregnancy as she is not
at our hospital and I haven't seen her. Please respond as quickly as
possible and TIA. (I'm just now figuring out what some of these alphabet
combinations mean.)
