Hi everyone,
I wanted to let everyone know what was going on with the baby with
down syndrome that I have been working with. To update, the baby finger
fed for a few days and then latched on and was nursing well. She was
having a problem getting her to wake up to nurse more than every 4 hours
but her output was good. She went to the dr and her weight was the same,
dr was not concerned different scale, good output.
Yesterday she went to the cardioligist, baby needs surgery, in
about 4 - 6 months ( I think she said she needs a patch to close up two
small holes, my mind was racing and I didn't write it down). They went
back to the ped and baby had lost an oz, but her output is still good. The
cardioligist's wife is an LC, and he is very supportive of Breastfeeding,
hooray.
Now, we need this little treasure to gain, mom is still trying to
wake her but not doing very well, she has tryed everything I can think of.
(undress, talking, walking fingers up back, washcloth, playing with feet)
She was going to try to finger feed when she wasn't quite awake but that
didn't work before. She is pumping a little before she nurses so we don't
waist any sucking on a let down it's all there and flowing, (not a milk
supply problem). After she finishes nursing she is going to pump and save
the hind milk to use in an SNS with the next feeding to help the baby get
more milk in before she gets too tired to finish. She is watching her
swallowing with the SNS to make sure she can handle the extra milk. I
think we also spoke about breast compression but I have to check my notes,
if not I'll tell her today.
The mom has been doing everything 'right' she does massage, skin to
skin, physical therapy, lots of stimulation and when I spoke to her she was
taking this in stride. I really want to help her as much as I can and I
know there are many, many of you out there who can give me some imput as to
how to help guide this couple.
I am currently nomail (mailbox too full as soon as I read all the
old posts I'll be back) so please email me privatly in addition to the
list.

TIA
