To answer a few more questions about this mom -

Baby girl bw 8# 14oz, HC 14, and 22 inch length
at 4 mo. 12# 16 or 161/2 HC, and 26 3/4 length

Parent and family info:
Dad 20 or 22# at 12 month
Mom is a twin, no baby info but 5-8 and 130#

Mom has 2 nieces that were very small, one was 16-18#at a year and the other
may have been just over 12# at a year.

Developmentally wise she is sitting up with minimal support, standing with
waist support, rolling back and front and reaching for food at meals.

Mom also mentioned green watery and very stinky poops. I'm not sure what to
suggest about that.

Mom also works 8 hours per week as OB nurse and has concerns that baby is
getting too attached to the bottle and will soon reject breastfeeding. She
is very dedicated to breastfeeding and feels very emotional about all the
problems she seems to be having and the possibility she sees of possible
weaning away from it.

Here is what she wrote:

"Our baby doc didn't test for FTT as she's still gaining some (18 oz. in
past month) and has only gone to 25th percentile. We'll be weighing her
monthly to track...What concerns me, as I feel she's just fine wt. wise
(or is that merely a hope) is that when I work she gets a bottle...I've
been pumping at night and using that as supplement during the day and so
when I work she gets 1-2 feedings of formula, which I hate! But I can't
seem to produce extra for those days. Also, she's very fond of that
bottle and it scares me that she'll self wean ( I guess then I pump and
she'll get breastmilk via bottle?). We've tried to supp. any time she
seems at all hungry (usually eve. before bed) and so that's more bottle
time and occ. more formula...if she's already had the formula does that
mean exposure and the allergy point is mute? I don't know, also, if my
milk production would be greater if she were more avid at nursing (
she'll hardly nurse before bedtime anymore) or if she's getting what she
wants and that's what my level is or will I simply never get beyond this
point because of my early-on experiences (ie a couple of severe, 3-day
plugs/engorgement and her needing motivation to feed)?"

I don't know why I feel at a loss with this mom (ok, I'm not an LC-yet and
see lots of areas for improvement!) but she brings up alot of stuff that
raises little flags in my brain. She just mentioned the severe plugs/
engorgement, that could have an effect on the milk supply later on as I
understand. Also the bottles in the evening. Could I mention to her the
possibility that baby is acting normally to be fussy in the evening (as many
babys are then) and may not need the bottle of supplement? (or maybe didn't
before and does now that it seems to be established?) What can I suggest to
her to help her hang on to the breastfeeding if in fact her baby decides she
prefers the bottle?

Janette
