Various patents on human lactoferrin state the use of this human milk
component for burns. This particular patent is for a cloned version of human
lactoferrin. The company is Ferrodynamics of Houston, Texas. The company received
$94,430 from the SBA of the US Government in their SB Technology Transfer
Program for "lactoferrin & developement of inflammation." So one might assume that
the intent of this company is to develop and market human lactoferrin. Maybe
their product is in your local pharmacy now???

The number of companies interested in the commercialization of human
lactoferrin is steadily increasing, as well as an increasing number of patents on this
human milk component (mostly genetically engineered). The following
companies sponsored the 6th International Conference on Lactoferrin: Biopole,
Dicofarm, Morinaga, Ventria Bioscience, Tatua Nutrional, DMV International, Nuclear
Receptor Ligand Co Ltd, Armor Proteines, Agennix, Ferrodynamics, Biosepra,
Jarrows Formulations. According to this website there are 200-300 researchers in
attendance at this conference.

The following patent also has a long list of hiv/aids health problems that
will be treated by human lactoferrin. I would be more than happy to email to
anyone interested or you can go to the patent office and look it up yourself.
The impact of hiv/aids on breastfeeding has been quite remarkable. Human milk
banking was severely impacted by it--near destruction of this valuable
resource. Hiv-positive mothers have been harrassed and/or prosecuted for wanting to
breastfeed their babies. Yet, we have companies that have patented this
component of human milk based on scientific research that shows that human
lactoferrin will treat and inactivate hiv/aids. I think it is ironic that we may have
a hiv-positive mother who will buy and use these products but are
"discouraged" from breastfeeding. In fact it is most interesting that ownership of this
most precious fluid (its components) is up for grabs. What companies win big
time from the discouragement of breastfeeding? What companies claim ownership
of human milk components?

I am thinking of having a patent party when we get to !000 human milk
patents. We are at about 700 now--(600 last year). So at this rate by the year
2006, we will probably have a 1000. Let's celebrate corporate ownership of human
milk components--such innovation should not go unnoticed!

Patent #6455687 "Human lactoferrin" by Kruzel et al, assignee Ferrodynamics

"Lactoferrin can be used as an antiseptic in accordance with the present
invention either alone or in the form of a powder, solution, ointment, aerosol
spray, or cream to any part of the subject as an aid in the prevention or
treatment of microbial infections. By depriving the surrounding environment of iron,
lactoferrin inhibits the growth of microbes, such as bacteria. Preferable
antiseptics of the present invention include lactoferrin either alone or
compounded with carriers such as saline, silica, talcum, stearic acid, its magnesium or
calcium salt, polyethyleneglycol, and fatty emulsions and suspensions that
will be readily apparent to the skilled artisan. The lactoferrin is preferably
present in the antiseptic based on 1 ml of the carrier at 0.1-2 mg, preferably
0.2-2 mg. An effective amount of the lactoferrin varies depending on the
individual treated, severity of infection, if any, and the area to which
administration is contemplated. Preferably, in treating mammals a twice-daily
administration of 0.1-2 mg, more preferably 0.5-2 mg, most preferably 1 mg, of
lactoferrin per 1 square centimeter effected area is contemplated more preferably 0.1
square centimeter. Lactoferrin can be used as an antiseptic in accordance with
the present invention to treat accidental scratches or burns. For example,
lactoferrin is applied over the affected area in the form of a 0.1-2 weight %,
preferably 0.1-1 weight % solution, or such a solution is used to impregnate a
Band-Aid type bandage with lactoferrin. Lactoferrin can be used as an
antiseptic in accordance with the present invention to provide prophylaxis in personal
hygiene products. For example, the prevention of vaginal infections is
accomplished by daily administration of 25-50 mg of lactoferrin in a form of douches
or pads. Similarly, the oral infections are prevented by daily administration
of 25-50 mg of lactoferrin in a form of mouthwash. Also, lactoferrin provides
added protection against sexually transmitted infections when compounded into
any device used during sexual activities by either males or females. For
example, lactoferrin is added into lubricant to cover condoms at the concentration
of 25-50 mg per application. Lactoferrin can be used as antiseptic in
accordance with the present invention to impregnate any surgical tools, materials or
protective clothing that is used by health care personnel. For example,
surgical gloves, masks or linens are covered with a 0.1-2.0% by weight solution of
lactoferrin, preferably 0.1-1% by weight. The solution can be applied by a
spray, conveniently provided in pressurized aerosol cans or pump bottles."
