Dee writes about a mother experiencing nipple trauma as the result of the
Pump In Style. It has been my experience that some mothers do not tolerate
the PNS. While rare, I've had occasional moms with very sore nipples who
couldn't heal (while resting on a pump) with that pump, who (when switched
to a Lactina or Classic) would heal right up. It seemed to have more to do
with the speed of the release of the suction than with actual pressure
generated. Perhaps the PNS has a different or delayed release of suction.
Maybe slightly over-sustained pressure is a bit too much for super-sensitive
or already-traumatized moms. That said, I've seen many moms with nipple
problems "rest" on their PNS and do just fine. It's a just another lesson
in the fact that one size does not fit all, and that tool use has to be
individualized. Just because something works well most of the time doesn't
mean it will always work. Creative solutions involve doing just what Dee
did: try another pump or hand expression until a solution was found that
worked for that individual mom.
