I agree with this. But I would also add, just because a woman becomes
pregnant against her will does not mean that she can't love her baby who
was not at fault and be a great mom! And those moms should be given the
option to breastfeed, not just make the assumption that she will not.

Some of the women on the list below seem to be women who also should not
have custody of their babies. I have not followed the rest of this
discussion but this post seems to implicate a fine line between damage
and incapacity that makes breastfeeding impossible and that which makes
all adequate parenting impossible. Breastfeeding and learning to bond
with a child can also be part of a larger recovery process.

Absolutely right about the economic factors militating against recovery
success, especially with the near total absence of drug treatment
programs that allow children and the total absence of in-patient
post-partum depression programs that allow children.

Jake Marcus, J.D.

"I cannot speak for Betsy, but I have seen moms for whom (breastfeeding)
would not (and should not) ever be the choice:
Women actively abusing drugs and alcohol Women too self-possessed to
recognize their baby's needs Women mentally challenged and unable
comprehend the baby's needs Young girls pregnant as a result of physical
abuse/rape"
