This is a fascinating piece of folklore.  Could we please hear from people
who have encountered this in other locales than the southern US?  Or whether
there are variants depending on where in the south you come from?

Who is John, anyway?  I ask in all sincerity- why isn't it called Blue JANE,
or Blue Albert?
