PTP- g4p1 33 weeks pregnant. Hx of extremely sensitve nipples when not pregnant. She came to me to ask what she could do for her nipples as she dreads breastfeeding. With her 1st, for the first 6 weeks, she felt like shards of glass in her breast with breastfeeding. No antibiotics, unmedicated delivery, no nipple trauma from breastfeeding. She breastfed over a year. She is very painfully sensitive now and was so when non-pregnant. She has a hx of 2 early losses and did not remember having sensitive nipples prior to those losses/pregnancies. Her nipples look normal. She does have from outer aspect around the top only, bilaterally, a white ring at the areolar/nipple edge. She denied having her daughter ever having bitten her. She will breastfeed regardless but was wondering if there was anything she could do to avoid the pain.

Thanks,

Allyson Michaels, RN,IBCLC
