Jessica and Others: The University of Illinois Perinatal Depression Project has
a nice one-page handout arranged in table form that lists all the current anti-
depressants. The headings are "advantages during
pregnancy", "disadvantages during pregnancy" "percent of dose to the
breastfed baby", "reported side effects", and "tetratogenicity". You should be
able to access this information via the website:
www.psych.uic.edu/clinical/HRSA.
I know and have worked with 1 of the major researchers on this project and
have referred to her many times over the years. Her co-worker recently had a
baby at my hospital and when the subject came up, I mentioned how useful I
have been finding this table - turns out she developed the table! She told me
the plan was to update the table as information changes. I laminated copies
and placed them on each of our units as well as the neonatology office for the
medical/nursing staff use.
To answer your question, Jessica, this group recommends Zoloft as the drug of
choice if mom is breastfeeding. Prozac is the drug of choice during
pregnancy - if mom is not planning on breastfeeding, it is recommended that
she stay on Prozac. Otherwise, the recommendation is she be switched from
Prozac to Zoloft, if breastfeeding.
