<<< 'The fatty acid [docosahexaenoic acid, known as DHA] in mothers'
milk is vital for proper development of the brain and to give it
protection from schizophrenia..... His survey, published in the
British Journal of Psychiatry, shows that seven out of ten
schizophrenia patients were not breast-fed." .......... It sounds
like another piece of documentation in support of breastfeeding to
add to our arsenal.>>>

Or was the study funded by the makers of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
supplements for infant formula? Sorry, I am a cynic. Lately I have
been reading too many marketing claims related to these supplements,
recently released in Australia. Did you know that Long Chain
Polyunsaturates (LCPs) are *the* (singular) missing ingredient in
infant formula? Sorry, I thought there were 1000s of missing
ingredients.

It makes me mad when marketing materials suggest a single solution.
Similarly, why doesn't a psychiatrist think that the breastfeeding
relationship itself might make a difference as to whether someone
realises their potential for schizophrenia? Many bottlefed babies
also get the "cry it out abandoned in another room" philoshopy of
parenting. Why attribute it to a single ingredient that can now be
added to formula "to prevent schizophrenia". Can't you see it in the
ads. Or is it yet another benefit of breastfeeding which will be
suppressed so the mothers of schizophrenics won't feel guilty.

Sorry Anne, this touched a button with me. It probably is a
wonderful study that looks at the broader issues that were not
reported in the press. Even if it is eventually hijacked by the
makers of DHA, we should all be using it to our advantage too.

Ros Escott,
surrounded by LCP hype which quotes studies done
by a researcher who is a partner in the LCP company
