Dear Colleagues:
I got a brainstorm about teaching latch that I offer for your comments. I
am doing this tonight in a local peer counseling class.
A long time ago, I made a video of latches as taught in other videos. I
have about 12: from Australia, England, Puerto Rico, Texas, California, Norway,
and some others. Everything and everybody credited. A written list handed out
with contact information.
Trainees, participants, and other students have to learn how to assess
latch, sometimes on the phone. It is our goal. It is what we must teach them.
Last week, I had them translate the physical assessment in their text,
Helping Mothers Breastfeed (Felicity Savage-King.......oh what a GREAT name!)
from a visual to an auditory history. They had to use the same outline and
organization as the text, but shift the questions to focus on the description they
would need to hear to paint the mother's picture. It was a wonderful class;
everybody talked. Everyone had their own unique, valid point of view.
Tonight, they will see 12 latches, from around the world. They will ask
Marie and me, their faculty, "which is the right one?" We will reply, "That is
your job, to help the mother find out what is the right one for her."
I am so psyched for this class!! They can use their framework of
questions that they built last week to help with this. I can break them up into pairs,
focus on their own particular favorite position, and see if their buddy can
get an idea of it from the framework of questions.
    What do you all think?
    warmly,
