I was unable to pull up this article today. Is it the same study that
appeared in Pediatrics? That was an excellent peice by Birnbaum et al. on
infant blood levels for antidepressants in breastfeeding moms. The
conclusion is that the risk is VERY low and...that which antidepressant to
use should be based on what will work for the mom. The authors point out
the risk to infants of being raised by a depressed mom and how it must be
weighed against this very LOW risk of infant side effect from the drug.
Of the infants in the study (n=35) , those whose mothers were treated only
during lactation showed NO detectable blood levels. Some of those whose
moms were treated during both pregnancy and lactation showed detectable but
low levels. None of the moms whose babies had detectable levels reported
any effect at all on the infant.

Just wanted to point out this very recent article on the use of
antidepressants in breastfeeding mothers. No mention of risk of
depression due to weaning.
