The problem I see with mentoring as we have it now is the need for higher
level or experience IBCLCs to do such teaching. What we have now is such a
hodge podge of learning, skills, knowledge. It is difficult for many of us
to mentor someone. I know of people who got mentored by an IBCLC and I don't
see the end product being someone I would send clients to. It appears to me
that the mentor was/is low level, and the student comes out low level, with
poor skills and no knowledge of such things as care plans, HCP reports,
liability insurance, counseling skills, etc. I think this is why we need
more formal education with an internship at the end.
