First of all, I'm sorry you had such a rough experience. It is truly
upsetting when you have only good intentions towards others to be
rejected. I've been doing this for almost 22 years and one of the
things I've had to learn is to set some boundaries with the moms. I
tell them what I'm going to do, what I'm looking for, the a&p of what's
going on in the baby and try to validate the mom's feelings. If the mom
is not comfortable with these things, and I can sense resistance, I
would cut my losses and tell her she might need to seek someone else's
services. We cannot guarantee anything because every situation is
unique, but neither can we alter a situation if there is no interest in
trying suggestions that we may make. Part of the evolution of our
profession includes respect from our clients to pay us for our time - or
not use us at all!

Subject: Private practice LC's and difficult clients

With my afternoon client...something went terribly wrong. First 5
minutes, she refused skin to skin for her and baby because she thought
this would upset the baby. She consistently resisted everything I
suggested. I mean everything. Even down to the payment. The entire 2
hours I had a smile on my face and was very professional trying every
trick in the bag to give her what she paid for. It makes me wonder
whether I should have left significantly early on in the consult when
the first criticism started without trying further. My question is: what
is the professional standard with people like this? Leave early and cut
my losses or try to work it out despite the passive aggressive
behaviors? Seriously, I have only worked and served the most wonderful,
hard working, loving, appreciative clients in the world.

Anybody have any similar situations or experiences please PM.

Thanks,
Julie Johnson; IBCLC
