Dear Friends:

Sounds like some of the same arguments and resistance to s2s as there are to
breastfeeding, and for the same reasons: ignorance of the evidence and
resistance to change!

"It's a conversation a colleague had earlier this year with a
healthcare professional (a midwife or possibly a neo-natal nurse)
from her local hospital's Special Care Baby Unit. This was after
hearing a talk by Nils Bergman on the importance of skin to skin.

'I can see this would be a good thing, but we can't do it in our
unit, 'cos there isn't enough room to put chairs for the mothers to
sit in.'

This was said, according to my colleague, with no eye rolling or
sense of irony or anger....just acceptance."

"I think that we need to be more aware of today's birth process and that A
LOT of babies are unable to be held by the mother after birth due to extreme
prematurity/illness. When this occurs we should not make mom/dad feel guilty
for not being able to hold their babies."

I've heard that in Switzerland, folding lounge chairs (the kind used at the
beach) can be easily stored out of the way.

Skin to skin was discovered as a way to save the lives of premature infants.
