Like almost all behaviors among the higher primates, there are genetic
components and learned components, and the higher up you go in the primates
(prosimians-monkeys-apes-humans) the bigger the learned component.  Unlike a
dog, who instinctively knows how to nurse and nurture her puppies even if
she was raised all alone in a human home, a higher primate such as a monkey
or ape will not be very good at mothering if raised alone in a zoo.
