I got a call from a mom today, nursing a 6 week old. Had successfully
nursed her first until 15 months. The problem is this: one nipple has been
bleeding when she nurses since about two weeks postpartum. It doesn't hurt
at all to nurse on that side, except maybe a tiny bit at latch-on and she
says it doesn't look bad. She's noticed blood in the baby's spitup, which
has increased a lot in the past 3 days (still no pain!), and is now causing
her stools to be greenish-black. Baby is gaining great and she's sure the
problem is not coming from the baby because the baby's spit-up only has
blood in it after she nurses. And, again, it's only on one nipple. Mom
reports that she generally has sensitive nipples, but nursing does not hurt
on that side, except maybe a little bit at latch-on. I recommended Lansinoh
and Soothies, maybe giving that side a rest and minimizing nursing on it for
a couple days, while pumping it to keep up supply. Mom is already varying
positions. Suggested she see her doctor to rule out any problems inside the
breast. Any other suggestions or thoughts anyone can provide would be
greatly appreciated.
