I don't weigh babies pre and post feeds very often. I can probably count on
the fingers of one hand the times over the last 6weeks. But twice recently
I have done it with great efect. Both babies (one was my own sister's)
failing to thrive. We were able to ascertain that babies took 80-100 mls
per feed. but they only fed 5-6 times per day (from birth pretty much)
Both mums wanted to breastfeed but were happy with how "settled" their
babies were, and initially reluctant to offer extra feeds (because this made
their babies become "unsettled") It helped the mothers to see that their
babies were having an OK amount per feed - but they needed more feeds.

I would love the references of how much to supplement to increase weightgain
Catherine mentioned. Last week I worked with a mum whose baby was also
failure to thrive. (A very similar case to my sister's) 2006 above
birthweight at 6 weeks. Unfortunately the mother was hospitalised and the
paeds insisted baby must have 80mls of s26 made up with an extra scoop of
powder after every breastfeed. (bf 5 mins on each side) Nothing would
persuade them that you could maintain breastfeeding and increase weightgain.
The baby was weaned by the end of the week.

Warm Regards
