Arly, could you elaborate and enlarge a little more on the
"grandmother effect" you mentioned on May 31? I have suspected
this for a long time, and am delighted to hear that it's really
"on the books". I've often wondered how I was born to a well-
nourished-during-pregnancy American woman but weighed only 6 lbs
8 oz, and my daughter born to a well-nourished etc. weighed 8 lbs
9 oz! My husband is no heavy-weight genetically either. My
grandmother, according to my Mom, was well-nourished during
pregnancy with my mother, but a year after her birth, WW I broke
out (they lived in Hungary at the time), and there was real
dietary privation. We don't know my mother's birthweight or how
long she was breastfed. This is really interesting and I'd like
to hear more. Judy Knopf
