I think this goes WAY back to the days (50-80's) when we used "mexican hat"
nipple shields - thick rubber that affected milk supply.  (decreased areolar
stim, decreased transfer of milk etc )  Babies got really addicted to them
and some moms found that by cutting a little away every day they could
eventually get rid of them.

With the softer pliable shields most babies today seem to be able to begin
nursing on the shield and then mom slips it off and pops baby back on (bait
and switch :-)
