HI All,
Now here is a wierd one for you. When I got pregnant with my first son, I
weighed 165lbs (that;s about 40lbs over what I "should" have weighed). I was
healthy, ate well, not into junk food at all, and weight was steady. Gained
20 lbs with pregnancy. Within 3 mo of birth, I had dropped 60 (count em!)
lbs! I was eating the same way I had during pregnancy (increased calories,
which is hard for me because I have never been a big eater), and BF
exclusively. I satyed at this skinny 125 for almost 3 yrs. I didn't diet,
or eat any differently that I ever had and didn't exercise at all (except
playing with my kid!). I started putting on wieght and got up to 165 again.
(Finally, back to that familiar weight!) THis time, I dieted (no fat) and
exercised under Dr supervision, had body fat calculated all that stuff.
After 3 mo of the dieting and exercise (which was 5 days a week with walking
on the other 2 days) I had toned up, but not lost ANY body fat!
OK, 2nd kid. Got preg at 160 lbs, gained 30 lbs, lost 45. BF Exclusively
for 9 mo when solids were introduced in minimal form, solids not really
thrown in until 14 mo. Weight was steady at 145-150.
Third kid. Got preg at 150. LOST WEIGHT! Body fat was dropping everywhere
(could see face, thighs, everything slimming down except my tummy where I
started showing at 3 mo). So far have gained 30 lbs with this pregnancy. So
what will happen this time after the birth? Will I lose a ton of weight and
get really skinny (you know, that no fat anywhere thing, can wear skin tight
clothes and look great, thing? GAG ME! I sure as heck hope not! I like my
few extra pounds, quite frankly.) Or will I stay at a weight I am happy
with? (About 140-150)
I think that all these weight things have a lot to do with the womans own
basic metabolism, and not as much to do with BF as we would like to think.
There are many women who lose wieght like crazy while BF, and many who don't
lose any. My cousin lost the pregnancy weight, but nothing else, and she BF
exclusively (no solids or ABM) for 6 mo. She has always been overweight (one
might say on the border of obese) but she eats healthy, and exercises. Have
there been any studies done on womens basic metabolisms in conjunction with
BF and weight loss? How about a study on why the metabolism changes (as mine
did) after the birth of one childd, and not another? And why would the body
suddenly change its metabolism after 3 years?
TOo many questions, not enough researchers...
