Goodmorning all,

I'm not a very good Lactnet-reader these days, it's just too much each day to keep track, but this discussion caught my attention. It is know for quite some time that Gentian Violet is an effective treatment option for MRSA skin infections. A quick Google Scholar search [http://scholar.google.nl/scholar?hl=nl&q=gentian+violet+MRSA&btnG=&lr=] will give lots of hits, both older and more recent. Note that normal use on skin and mucousy skin (not finding the correct term here) of GV is not carciogenic. The old research on small rodents was carried out by adding large doses of GV in alcohol tot daily diet during their entire life. That can not be extrapolated to external short-term use of a water solution.
The use of bleach is to be discouraged for environmental reasons.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC in PP. LC lecturer, in Southern Netherlands
