The rash of posts about a talk show host who has gotten plenty of exposure
in these digests already so I won't mention his name, sent me to my
bookshelves to find the antidote.

I have a book here called 'Around the Circle Gently', a compilation of good
quotes edited by Lynn Moen, who used to run Birth and Life Books in Seattle
and Judy Laik, an author and book reviewer for the catalog the store used to
send out. Lynn was the first LLLL in Washington State.

A few pertinent ones on infancy:
"Crying is as good for the lungs as bleeding is for the veins." This is
attributed to Lee Salk, Herbert Ratner, and others.

"Happy the man with a nursing child, for he has a singing wife." - German
proverb

And then there's one Lynn herself supplied:
"As I picked up my baby to nurse, my husband's spinster aunt would say,
'Yes, if you've got a crying baby, give him a bust in the mouth.' "

This book is good. Where else can you find quotations from Dr. Seuss and
Princess Grace in the same volume?
ISBN 0-89087-766-1
I don't know how available it is now. Of course I have no financial
interest in it.
