Dear Deborah,
In a mesasge dated 20/05/98 18:41:16 GMT, you write:
<< The mother's nipple should be more protruding and
graspable if the baby has been nursing on the shield with enough
effectiveness
to extract milk consequently pulling the mother's nipple out to a more
 protracted position >>

Graspable, Deborah, imho this is a word that you need to dispose of quickly,
the nipple should never be grasped, the baby breastfeeds not nipplefeeds. The
line 'let the baby grasp the nipple' used to be used/regurgitated again and
again, edition after edition in the olden days in breastfeeding literature,
especially midwifery books - use of a misleading word to portray to the new
mother how not to do it. The mother will think that that is what she must let
baby do to breastfeed. There are lots of words that paint the wrong picture -
another 'favourite' of mine is - empty, grrr .... or still as in still
breastfeeding?
My kindest regards to you
