For those of you who read my rants about the professional journal of my
certifying body (National Certification Board for Pediatric Nurses and
Practitioners, or NCBPNP), here is their response. I will continue to
watch this journal (though I refuse to buy it until the formula ads are
removed.) Honestly, look at this Journal if you wonder we get such
marginal support for breastfeeding from PNPs!

Dear Susan,

As you may know, I am the Editor of PEDIATRIC NURSING and received your
e-mail letter that was sent concerning your promotional copy of the
journal. I wanted you to know that I sincerely appreciate hearing from
readers of PEDIATRIC NURSING (including perspective readers!) about
content appearing in the journal as I strive to continuously improve the

quality of the journal. I value and I welcome differences of opinion
that
can fuel debate and discussion around topics or issues that matter to us

all. On the specific matter that you raised, I am very aware of the
problems associated with content that may be perceived to "promote"
non-breastfeeding, and I assure you that I did not intend for that
subtle
message conveyed in the printed pages. I agree with your opinion that
breastfeeding newborns is best.

I wanted you to know that your "letter" will appear in the journal with
a
response from the author of the manuscript (who also agrees that
"breastfeeding" is best) so that your message is emphasized - that
nurses
should promote breastfeeding - and that it gets additional attention as
well. In future articles that may appear in the journal, I welcome your
continued responses to these matters.

Thank you for the time you took to write a letter and, although you do
not
plan to subscribe to PEDIATRIC NURSING, the benefit you have given to it

on this issue in your letter.

Veronica D. Feeg, PhD, RN, FAAN
Editor, PEDIATRIC NURSING
