Hello,

I just need to know if I am way off base or not here. A colleague called
about a mom who is having some problems - the main one being the baby will
no longer latch on to one breast because the nipple is now inverted. The
doc dx mastitis and gave her antibiotics and a nipple shield. I was telling
her everything ever written about mastitis never lists nipple inversion that
is a major problem (pathology) and only place you hear about it is in
directions for breast self exams and she needs to be looked at and referred
to a breast surgeon/specialist. While getting more info for the mom she
called a local hospital to ask if there are any breast specialists in the
area. When the nurse was asking why she wanted to know she commented on the
now inverted nipple and the nurse assured her this happens all the time.

Now talk about frustration! Since my understanding was that inversion comes
from how the breast buds form during fetal development they don't become
inverted for any ole reason. I could see how with loads of pit and iv
fluids a mom's nipples becoming flat from edema - but not inverted and not
weeks after leaving the hospital. So now I hope this mom keeps pushing
until she gets real answers - but answer me, am I totally off base?!? Do
nipples go from everted to inverted 'all the time' in normal breastfeeding
moms and I just didn't notice after 15 years of doing this work?

Thanks

Felicia Henry, BCCE, IBCLC

Now wondering if it's true nipples become inverted all the time - do young
children suddenly develop cleft palates also.
