Ok, my IBLCE card says valid UNTIL 2013. My certificate says valid THROUGH
2013. Speaking of using language correctly, these two documents say
different things. I read the card as saying I am certified until Dec. 31, 2012
and the certificate to read that I am certified until Dec. 31 2013. I
re-took the exam in 2008. I received my results in Oct. Is it possible that
our certifying organization does not know what they are doing? Regardless,
even if I failed the test I am still certified until the end of the period
when the certificate says I am valid. I will get in touch with the IBLCE
re this discrepancy. I do know I am certified until some time in 2013.
As far as being a mentor one is an IBCLC until the certification runs out.
So, if someone is due to take a re-test in July they are certified until
Dec. 31 of the yr. their certification runs out. After that they cannot
continue as a mentor unless they have successfully re-certified. Just because
you are due to take the test shouldn't mean you can't be a mentor. How
silly would that be? And exactly how many people re-certifying by exam fail if
they've already passed one or more times. If the mentor does not re-take
the test and loses certification then she needs to tell her mentee. And
the IBLCE needs to have clear info re expiration dates on cards and
certificates.

Kathy Boggs, RN, IBCLC (until or thru 2013, I think)
