A mother of a 12 month old called today telling me she was needing to
abruptly wean (doctor recommendation) due to diagnosed milk, corn, and wheat
allergies in the baby. She was told that of the three, corn was the most
important to eliminate, but that the baby could probably handle some dairy
and wheat. This baby has been off of antibiotics for only three weeks IN
THE LAST 9 MONTHS!!!!!! due to chronic ear infections. They are suspecting
reflux now ( I think there is no normal gut flora for the baby protecting
his gut...talked about bifidus with the mom.)

Needless to say, the wee one is having major fits and conniptions over the
weaning. These three allergens are insidious in so many food products; I
talked with her about a diet elimination for her, raising the possibility of
continuing the nursing.

Dairy allergy stuff is the protein. I guess I don't understand the
transmission of corn allergen through breastmilk. Can anyone explain to me
what aspect of corn through breastmilk would be the problem? Would straight
corn, or corn chips, or Sugar Corn Pops (my favorite!) be of more of a
problem compared to a product that lists corn syrup or corn starch as the
near the bottom ingredient?

I told her about the Food Allergy Network. Does anyone have favorite
websites for her?

Thanks, all
