At least I think new...couldn't find this in the archives.
A mother called me to say her doctor has prescribed an estrogen-containing
oral contraceptive *for heavy bleeding*: double dose till the bleeding
stops, then finish the month's pack.
Fortunately her baby is 2 1/2 months old by now, and I'm crossing my
fingers that she will be one of the individuals who does not respond to
estrogen with (much) lowered supply.
The discussions of this that I have seen assume that the mother has
alternatives: another oral contraceptive w/o estrogen, or another
contraceptive method entirely.
(1) Are there alternative treatments she could discuss with her doctor?  Is
the estrogen itself critical to treatment of her problem, or could she use
a progestin-only pill?
(2) If this treatment is unavoidable and she does lose some supply, will it
respond favorably to increased nursing, pumping, fenugreek, and/or
domperidone?  Again, the discussions I've seen all assume the way to get
supply back up is simply to stop taking the estrogen.
