Greetings,

I am really in need of some reference articles that deal with the risks
of using bottle nipples as nipple shields.

For the second time in 4 days, a night nurse has used a bottle nipple as
a nipple shield. I really thought this was a dead issue and definately
taboo, but somehow it has started to "become popular"again.

I want to go to the next staff meeting with references in hand stating
why this is an unexceptable practice.
A check of the textbooks in my office state that it should not be done,
but do not list reasons or references I could use. I know ofcourse that
it decreases the stimulation to mom and can lead to decreased supply and
failure to gain in infant, but would like to have some studies.

TIA,
Judy Hatfield RNC, IBCLC
