We use the regular bottle nipples for most of our babies, the ones provided
by the formula companies. We also use the NUK nipple quite a bit. We have
gotten rid of the very fast teeny tiny formula nipples, and rarely use the
"preemie" nipples they provide. We have used the Avent variable flow nipples
(you can purchase these where Avent products are sold). I like them, but for
most of the nurses they are "too slow," which I know is the purpose. But they
certainly work well, and are much cheaper than Habermann's and easier to find
if moms need them. There are a lot of factors in the NICU to be considered. I
also had a long, not at all helpful discussion with the Avent people, as you
cannot by these nipples with a bottle, must buy it separately. Then you have
to buy a bottle that comes with a different nipple that you don't use, a
waste of money.
