Re bathing
I agree, why bathe newborns? However, I am aware that this practice is not limited to North America, but has been exported into the Western Pacific. After a baby’s death, a WHO doctor developed Early Essential Newborn Care project to rewire the learned procedures of a baby’s first minutes and hours so that they are only being subjected to essential care. To read more, look at the WHO western pacific region webpage http://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/newborns-reducing-mortality. There are other articles available if you search the site.

Subject: Delayed bath and breastfeeding

I am currently working on a Random Controlled Trial (RCT) related exactly to delaying the bath and breastfeeding. I am not currently seeing any big differences in rates however it isn't done and there are other reasons to delay the bath and avoid separation i.e. maintaining core temperature, promoting skin to skin, the protective effect of vernix and maintaining blood glucose levels in susceptible infants to name a few. Currently, the National Institute of Health in the USA recommends delaying the newborn bath for at least 12 hours. I am hoping to be done with data collection in the next 2 months.

Regarding bathing: Why bathe the baby? What is the purpose? I've always
wondered. Wiping the fluids off is usually plenty of cleaning, unless
they're covered in meconium (and then you have other issues).
