Hi Janice
As far as statements go, I have seen worse. I am not Canadian, so I don't know that it would be appropriate for me to provide feedback. If I was going to provided feedback, I would suggest that the discussion of 'optional' additives to infant formula products (and the marketing claims made around them) include some guidance or comment about the additional costs associated with these additives. Perhaps a definitive statement to the effect that parent can be reassured that because all infant formula products must conform to the relevant food standard and there is no conclusive evidence that the additives mitigate the harms associated with formula feeding, parents can choose an infant formula base on price alone. There might also be some discussion of the issue of affordability, noting that 'premium' infant formulas can be so expensive that infants health may be placed at risk by parents who are reluctant to discard the uneaten portion of a feed, or who are tempted to restrict the size or frequency of feeds, or even over dilute in the mistaken belief that a 'premium' infant formula is 'better'' for their infant. Health professionals should discuss marketing claims - and the (lack of) evidence supporting them
with parents so that they will be able to choose an infant formula product that is affordable.
