It is really interesting how much urban mythology has sprung up around this
rebate business!

There was a class action lawsuit in eleven US states to recoup monies from
Mead Johnson & Ross Labs that were overcharged through price fixing. Simply
put, the US government found that the companies were artificially
escalating the cost of formula, and ordered them to return some of their
excess profits. Parents who purchased infant formula at retail outlets
between 1980 & 1992 in the states of FL, IL, KY, LA, MI, MN,  NV, ND, SD,
TN, & WV could apply.
*The deadline has passed to file for rebate.*  The URL I had for the
lawsuit is no longer has info about this issue.

I do think it is interesting how the public consciousness has determined
that the rebate is happening because there was something wrong with the
formula.  This may mean that the message about hazards of formula feeding
is getting across.  Kudos to all who have worked to collect and communicate
this information!
