I just read the column on breastfeeding in the Boston Globe. This
doctor just started writing this column in the last couple of months. I
have read a few of them and have been underwhelmed in general by his
writing and his approach.

I tend to have a couple of reactions when I read things like this. I
feel for him and his wife. The system failed them miserably. They did
the best they could with the poor information and support that they
had.

A response should not try to educate or convince him of anything. He is
using intellectual arguments (i.e. all the research he quotes) to
address what is essentially an emotional issue. This is not about the
benefits of bfing vs. formula. It is about his wife's failure to bf and
the system's failure to provide support and education. They need
support and to know that they are not failures.

Formulating a response will involve addressing the real issues, not the
ones the columnist uses.

I'm looking forward to seeing people's letters on this one.
