What might have happened is that the doctor explained to her that yeast
infections can go hand in hand with vasospasm and is advising discarding her
milk to avoid reinfection once she is treated for yeast. You might be able to
clarify what is going on by talking directly to her the doctor caring for her.
Make sure that she is using the correct size flange for her pump and that she
pumps in a really warm room and have her apply heat to her nipples in the
form of a heating pad when she is done nursing jor pumping. This will help to
return the circulation to her nipples. It is possible that there is no yeast
infection at all, but just vasospasms. Ask her about her fingertips and if she
has problems with them in cold weather. Ask her if her nipples were sensitve
to cold before she began nursing. Ask her about a history of any autoimmune
disorders. All of these can point to a predisposition for having vasospasms.
Also, if she has vasospasms it will make it harder for body to fight off
microorganisms because of the decreased circulation to the nipples, so she
may very well have some coexisting skin infection (either yeast or bacterial).
But first try the heat.If the heat can break through her vasospasms then
there may not be a need for other treatments. It seems to me that women
with vasospasms are often treated needlessly for yeast. Also, there is a lot of
info in the archives about heating milk to kill yeast so that in the event that
she really does have an infection she can still give the frozen milk to the baby.
She could also just take a chance and give the frozen milk to the baby and if
she gets reinfected be treated for yeast again.
Good luck and if nothing else works Procardia is an absolute wonder drug for
vasospasms, generally just stops them dead in their tracks!!!
