I had a call from a mum yesterday who reported her milk tasted soapy
after only a day or two of sitting in the fridge. Numerous posts in the
archives mention this and I said that it was probably the fat in her
milk being broken down and that she could
"scald" the milk and then cool it to stop the enzyme activiity from
breaking the fat down. Her next question was "So why is expressed milk
supposed to be warmed up slowly and not overheated?" Hmmm. My thought
was that heating too much and too rapidly inactivates or destroys some
of the ingredients in breastmilk so it's generally not recommended but
if you have a problem with soapy milk, the alternative is not using that
milk and breastmilk with some properties destroyed is still better than
formula. These feedings of expressed milk were occaisional, so it's not
like the baby will be "missing" anything. Am I on the right track? I
said I would ring her back in a day or two.
