I just got a phone call. One of the moms in my childbirth classes recently
had her baby at a teaching hospital during a baby boom. Nursing staff was
pulled from surgery and from other floors and not all were experienced
maternity staffers. Mom was planning to BF, but the nurses were too busy to
help out, so dad closed the door and said he'd help her. He regurgitated
information he had heard in class and helped her position baby tummy-to-tummy,
tongue under nipple, areola in mouth, helped mom get herself comfy and release
the tension in her shoulder. Baby slowly learned how to nurse over three
feedings and is now 20 days old and BF exclusively!
Ain't that just wunnerful? I keep telling dads that they make all the
world of difference in labor, during birth and that they are the cornerstone
to successful breastfeeding - here's my shining example.
