Mary,
Has anyone checked her blood pressure lately? Increased blood
pressure can accompany increased edema. Simply "eating less salt"
isn't what she needs now. She needs some sort of relief. I worked
with a mom just yesterday with very similar symptoms. She had been
discharged 2 days ago and was staying as a "boarder" because her
baby is in the NICU. When a mom is discharged and boarding, they
get no nursing care and the docs generally don't visit (except for a
few that just want to keep in touch-it's not a charged visit).
Apparantly she had mentioned the edema to baby's nurse and in
passing also commented on some blurred vision, so one of the docs
from her OB's group stopped in to check on her and her BP was
elevated-she didn't need treatment, but she was concentrating on
lying on her side when not busy with anything else and keeping her
feet elevated wheneve possible. We did get her engorgement reduced
with massage, pumping, removing her pre-pregnancy bra, cabbage and
even cold washcloths.
Anyway, the point is that with edema and similar symptoms that go
beyond mild, it is important to check out other symptoms as well.

Winnie
